Dessert Club: Pasta, Pudding, and Bronson

June 27, 2012 by sarah

My first Dessert Club post! Dessert Club is a weekly get-together where our friend Matt comes over to eat and watch movies. (Sometimes we play games too.) What originally started as a quest to find the best desserts turned in a more relaxed event where I try out random recipes and we catch up on life.

Last night’s Dessert Club used these recipes:

  • Creamy Spinach Pasta with Roasted Tomatoes: This made A LOT of sauce! It was good but needed more seasoning than the recipe called for. Also got to try out our new immersion blender.
  • Churro Chips: I wasn’t a fan of this but Roy and Matt really liked it. I think using soymilk in the pudding put me off.

We watched the Charles Bronson biopic on Netflix and played some Bomberman for the Wii afterwards. It was Roy’s first time playing and…well, let’s just say he’s not much of a fighter.

Art: Rumbirds Vertical Banner

Rumbirds vertical banner / Photoshop / ~20 hours

One of the things I really wanted to have for ConnectiCon this year is a large banner to catch people’s eyes. I went with Half Price Banner, which was a service recommended to me last year at the same convention. Full circle!

My aim for the banner was to create something that wouldn’t look outdated so quickly. Linework was out of the question because my style is constantly evolving, so I took a more design-based approach. One of my goals this year is to be more comfortable with color, and I think I’m finally getting the hang of it with this color-blocking method. The end result is something a little more illustrative than I was shooting for (was originally planning for flat colors and textures – more “book cover”, less “movie poster”) but I think I’m pretty happy with it. It’s a good start, anyway.

The finished file was about 4GB and the actual banner itself will measure 80″ high. Crazy! Can’t wait to see how it looks in person.
